Aura Immutable State Machine: One-Way Progression and Saga Compensation

In classical software development, we are used to using try-catch-rollback. If a database write fails, we rollback the transaction. But when an Agent executes real-world tasks (such as sending Slack messages or modifying server configurations), “physical rollback” is a complete lie.
Aura introduces the Immutable State Machine, which is ultimate reverence for the execution side effects of the real world.
1. One-Way Progression: The World is Irreversible
In Aura’s execution flow, there is no “back button.” After each Matrix node finishes execution, the state machine generates a new Versioned State. Even if the execution fails, the system does not attempt to erase the trace of failure but records the “failure” itself as an occurred fact, continuing forward based on it.
2. Reification of Side Effects
To manage these irreversible behaviors, Matrix generates Side Effect Vouchers when executing skills:
- Resource Paths: Which file was modified?
- External Handles: Which API interface was called?
- Consumption Cost: How many tokens were spent?
3. Saga Compensation Mode: Repairing by Progressing
Since you cannot rollback, Aura adopts the mature Saga Pattern from distributed systems to handle errors.
3.1 Generation of Compensation DAG
When Meta identifies an unrecoverable error, it doesn’t rollback the state but generates a Compensation DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) in real-time based on the side effect vouchers:
- Action: If file A was accidentally deleted, the compensation task is not “undo” but “restore file A from backup.”
- Logical Branch: After compensation is complete, the system jumps to a dedicated “error recovery path” instead of returning to the original path before failure.
4. Architectural Significance: Eliminating State Machine Chaos
The immutable state machine completely eliminates the most common “state machine jitter” problem in Agent systems. Since the state is always deterministic and unidirectional, system debugging and auditing become extremely simple. We can clearly see how the Agent stumbled step by step, and how it stood up through compensation logic and eventually completed the task.
